Taynault - Kennecraig - Islay Island ⛴️ 🇬🇧

An early-ish start and a 2hr drive to Kennacraig for our ferry ride to Islay island.

Another amazing weather day, sunshine and the water blue, still sparkling. 2hrs of sailing across the Atlantic to the island. Spent the time chatting with a British cycle tourer and found we knew cyclists in common! Small world.

Arrived into Port Ellen's scenic port with whitewashed houses lining the beach. We drove to Ardbeg whisky distillery with a huge copper still outside and then views out the back to the beach and a tall ship.

Back to Port Ellen for picnic lunch and walk around the bay.

Then to Lagavulin Whisky Distillery where we had booked on a tasting tour. Not really a whisky person and so it was interesting to learn about what makes Scottish whisky so unique, the use of peat to give the smokey flavour. Tasking 4 different whiskys helped to identify the variations that age and the addition of water can make. Probably not about to go drink a bottle, but was a good experience.

The the road followed the coast with paddocks of sheep, wide bays and arrived into Port Charlotte. The youth hostel is located right on the beach with views of the lighthouse. Wandered along the beach to the lighthouse and on the way back a thick mist was rolling in.

Tonight I can no longer see the lighthouse due to the fog!

A relaxing place to spend a day ☀️
