Porto Venere ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

We decided on an easier day today (just 15000 steps, 35 flights of stairs๐Ÿ˜‚) and took the train and bus to Porto Venere.

The bus trip from La Spezia followed the coast with quaint little towns with boats on the harbour.

We arrived and wandered down to the shoreline and found that a boat cruise was soon to leave.  A spontaneous moment and we booked a ticket and got on board and departed straight away.

The water is a deep greeny/blue colour and we we followed the cliffs with caves, grottos and unusual rock strata.  The most famous grotto where Lord Byron used to come and sit and was inspired to write.

Once ashore we walked to the heads where the small Catholic church built in 1198 is still standing. Then a walk up to the castle with views along the coastline.

We enjoyed exploring the many little streets and noticed how skinny many of the houses are with doors almost next to each other!

If you are not a hiker then this is an outstanding village to stay and I would rate it higher than Monterosso, and only a short train ride to explore the 5 villages of the Cinque Terre ๐Ÿ˜Š

A cocktail beside the water late afternoon finished off a relaxing day.

Pasta for dinner back in our little village of Riomaggiore.
