Day 13 Horne - Lonstrup 🇩🇰

 A 60 KMs Sightseeing cycle

The sun was shining after two days of snow destroying rain.  The green fields back again and a flawless blue sky.  My Dutch housemate Timo and I had planned a cycle on our day off.

We set off cycling through farmland and then into the forest on some great marked cycle trails and then we were at our first destination, the Viking village.

Run by volunteers they maintain the open air type of working museum and use the space Viking style, wearing the clothes, camping out, preparing meals etc.  there was one very authentic looking guy who happily had a photo and we wandered through the village.  The wooden carvings are so intricate.

Then back on our bikes and headed for the Rubjerg Knude Fyr - this square lighthouse was built in 1900 but wind erosion of the sand dunes meant that the associated cottage ended up being engulfed with sand and destroyed.  The lighthouse itself was moved 70m inland in 2019 to protect it.

As the wind continues to erode the sand dunes, remnants of the cottage are exposed.  Visitors like to use the bricks to create messages in the sand which can be viewed from the top of the lighthouse.  To get to it you have to walk through dunes and then climb to the top.  The coastal views, especially on a blue sky day, are beautiful.  A great spot for a picnic lunch.

Timo headed back to an afternoon shift at speed and I meandered into the closest town of Lonstrup.

Timo had suggested I detour to see the site of an old church built in 1200 that had to be demolished as it was sliding into the sea due to the dune erosion.  The graveyard is all that remains and the steep dunes, (with fairly tame tiny rope barriers to keep visitors back) obviously get battered by the elements.

This quaint little old fishing village is now an arts town with multiple galleries and cafes.  An artsy vibe with people wandering the main street popping in to look at the art.  I tied up my bike and had a look at a few galleries.  I missed the bakery as it's only open half day 😳

I chose the sandy path to cycle along the shoreline till it was too difficult to ride and then found my way back home again.

I've made a fire and have some left over school dinners and hot chocolate with cream.  What a great day in the gorgeous north west of Denmark 🇩🇰
