This morning Gjirocaster was heavy with fog and I couldn't see the castle!
After leaving the hostel, I walked down the hill and to the bus stop, was transported to the regional bus stop at the junction of the new highway and off we went. Just 1hr today up over the mountain range behind the town and down the fabulous new highway cut into the mountains with huge retaining walls.
Albanians are master craftsmen with the use of rock, dry retaining walls, cobbles and stone paved pathways. The quality of the work is outstanding.

Saranda is a coastal town and only 14kms across the water from Corfu, Greece (35kms to Corfu port). Lots of high rise holiday apartments and a huge amount of construction going on.
I decided to walk to the Saranda castle, high on the hill and a good vantage point for views across the water to Corfu and back down to Saranda and then to the fertile valley and mountains I had crossed by bus.
There is not much left of the castle, but a beautiful cafeteria/restaurant and stage for a band have been built - but all closed. I also stopped at the lighthouse.
The Promenade is all decorated for Christmas and I watched the setting sun. Back to the hostel to do some washing and then down to grab souvlaki for dinner, and a wander through the Christmas lights.
